Why Northern White Cedar Instead of Pine?
With a life of 50 years or more, northern white cedar is the ideal wood to create heirlooms of tomorrow. It is a beautiful, light tan color when freshly milled. This color is preserved through a high-quality, catalyzed lacquer clear coat finish.
Northern white cedar creates its own natural preservative and withstands the abuse of seasonal elements without breaking down or rotting like other woods. Northern white cedar is:
-
naturally low in moisture;
-
naturally repellant to insects from special oils that you can't smell and insects avoid;
-
cedar's resin is naturally stable.
All of these qualities create furniture that is as long-lasting, as it is beautful.
Northern white cedar logs have 19-23% average moisture content right off the saw as compared to pine logs that have 50-55% average moisture content right off the saw. As a result, Cedar is air dried - nature's way of gently seasoning wood to maximize wood-cell stability. Splitting, cracking and checking are minimized, increasing the life and beauty of our product.
Pine is traditionally kiln dried, which is a hard, high heat process that can destabilize wood cells and reduce insulation ability. Kiln drying also accelerates splitting, cracking and checking.
Choose northern white cedar because of the low moisture content, naturally beautiful colors and character. Rustic Point owes its quality to the genius of nature - and the expertise of our gifted craftsmen!
